Ex-Steelers Pro Bowler’s Injury Status Uncertain Following Accident

The 27-year-old spent four seasons with the Steelers

It’s been over three weeks since Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris suffered a “superficial eye injury” during a July Fourth fireworks accident.

Harris was placed on the non-football injury list following the incident and on Monday, Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz gave an update on the former Pittsburgh Steelers star.

“He’s doing better every day,” Hortiz said in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio. “He’s dealing with it and he’s getting better. We’re going to be cautious and precautious with it and let him get healthy. There’s no rush, it’s early. We came into camp early, we got a long preseason to go so there’s no sense in rushing anyone out there.”

The 27-year-old former first-round pick spent the first four seasons of his career with the Steelers, posting at least 1,000 rushing yards and six touchdowns in each campaign. Harris was a Pro Bowler during his 2021 rookie season and has been one of the most durable backs in the NFL this decade, suiting up in all 68 regular season contests since entering the league.

He finished seventh in the NFL in rushing attempts last season with 263 and 10th in touches with 299.

Harris signed a one-year contract with the Chargers in March and is expected to be the starter, if healthy.
