NFL Rumors: Steelers In Play To Sign Super Bowl-Winning QB In Free Agency

The signal-caller has plenty of experience under his belt

The quarterback position has the biggest question surrounding it for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they enter the offseason.

Russell Wilson, who started 11 games in 2024 for the Steelers, and Justin Fields are set to hit the free agent market. The only quarterback they currently have under contract for next season is fourth-stringer Skylar Thompson.

That will force the Steelers to make a move at the all-important position — ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler did predict that Pittsburgh will re-sign Fields — and it feels like they will want to upgrade from Wilson. But there is the backup spot to consider, too, and Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline reported Sunday that Pittsburgh could look to a veteran, Super Bowl-winning signal-caller for that spot.

“I’m told to keep an eye on the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New England Patriots as suitors for Flacco in the offseason, as all would look for a veteran backup,” Pauline wrote.

Flacco certainly isn’t a viable starter for a full season at this point in his career, but the 40-year-old is a more than capable backup option. He showed that in 2023 with the Cleveland Browns when he went 4-1 down the stretch with 1,616 yards passing, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Flacco didn’t replicate that exact magic with the Indianapolis Colts this season when Anthony Richardson missed time. Flacco still went 2-4 for the Colts while completing 65.1% of his passes for 1,761 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven picks.

Mike Tomlin and the Steelers are very familiar with Flacco after he spent 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and led them to a win in Super Bowl XLVII. He left the Ravens following the 2018 season and bounced around as a backup for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Colts and Browns.

And perhaps, Flacco will add the Steelers to his list as he looks to play an 18th NFL season.
