Stephen A. Smith Impressed With Justin Fields, Wants More From Steelers Offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 2-0 with Justin Fields starting at quarterback.

Pittsburgh planned to start Russell Wilson in Week 1, but a calf injury forced Fields into action and the black and gold hasn’t looked back.

Through two games, Fields has thrown for 273 passing yards with a 69.8 completion percentage and a touchdown through the air. He’s also added 84 rushing yards on 22 attempts, playing mistake-free football to win for Pittsburgh.

Stephen A. Smith spoke about Fields’ performance thus far on ESPN’s “First Take” on Monday, crediting Fields for his performance so far — even if the Steelers’ offense is leaving a bit to be desired through two games.

“Well, listen I’m going to minimize it because they’re not asking him to do a whole lot,” Smith said on Monday’s “First Take.” “And I don’t think they’ve been that damn impressive, I’m a Steelers fan and I’m being a little bit emotional here. I appreciate in fact that in the first two games, Justin Fields has completed 70 percent of his passes and hasn’t committed a single turnover. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I really appreciate it. And I believe in the brother for the future because I think he’s a tremendous athlete.

“Here’s the problem; I’m a Steelers fan that watched this team offensively be anemic for years. They’re 29th in yards, 25th in scoring, okay? In terms of attempts, they’re number one in rushing attempts and 30th in passing attempts with Justin Fields. So I’m looking at it from that standpoint when you go up against these better teams, what’re you going to do under those conditions? I need to see more. I want to see more.”

The Steelers will look to improve the offense and move to 3-0 this weekend when they take on the undefeated Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. EST.
