Steelers Rumors: Pittsburgh Looking To Deal For Veteran Pro Bowler

Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh?

Arthur Smith might soon be reunited with an old friend.

The Miami Dolphins have engaged in trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers involving tight end Jonnu Smith, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jonnu Smith, who reportedly expressed interest in reworking the two-year deal he signed last offseason, has not been present for voluntary organized team activities this week in Miami. Pittsburgh would be a great landing spot should there be a move, as Jonnu Smith and Arthur Smith have a long-standing relationship with each other spanning stops with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.

Jonnu Smith set a franchise record for receptions (88) and receiving yards (884) by a tight end last season en route to his first career Pro Bowl.

The Steelers don’t have a glaring need at tight end, having signed Pat Freiermuth to a four-year, $48 million extension last offseason while also returning Darnell Washington and Connor Heyward from last season’s squad. Pittsburgh also signed Donald Parham Jr., who has 11 career touchdowns, earlier this offseason, so any move would just strengthen the group.

It’s possible this is just due diligence, but don’t be surprised to see something come together based on prior relationships and current contract situations — which are the catalyst for most trades in the NFL.
