NFL Rumors: Update On Justin Fields’ Potential Steelers Future

Pittsburgh might need to figure out a backup plan

If the Steelers wanted to bring Justin Fields back to Pittsburgh, it might need to figure out a backup plan.

Fields and Russell Wilson are set to enter free agency, but general manager Omar Khan expressed hope the team could re-sign one of the quarterbacks.

That seems unlikely as The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported Saturday that despite the Steelers’ interest in bringing him back, Fields is expected to test the market. FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported Friday that the New York Jets are high on Fields, so it seems like they will be the primary challenge for the Steelers.

NFL analysts believe Fields could net himself a decent payday given the derth of talent in the quarterback free agent class combined with a lack of talent in the 2025 draft class. Wilson still is an option for Pittsburgh. However, reports about how his tenure ended signal that the veteran quarterback could try to find another home.

The Steelers need to address their quarterback situation this offseason, but that task could prove to be difficult with other teams in a similar boat.
