The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback position is going to be the most interesting spot to watch on the team this offseason.
Pittsburgh has both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields heading to free agency. At this point, it would make sense for the team to bring one of them back, but there doesn’t seem to be any chance that both will be back. It wouldn’t be bad to bring either back and there is an argument that could be made in either player’s favor.
Whatever move the Steelers make for the starting spot, it will signal a different strategy. If the Steelers bring Wilson back, they absolutely should draft a young guy to try to build up as the team’s backup. If the Steelers were to re-sign Fields, then it would make sense to bring a veteran quarterback to town as the team’s backup.
There are going to be options out there in either direction. It’s going to be a very interesting offseason. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox made a list of the quarterbacks heading to free agency with the best and worst landing spots. Surprisingly, he said the Steelers would be the worst landing spot for 17-year veteran Joe Flacco.
“Worst Landing Spot: Pittsburgh Steelers,” Knox said. “Flacco’s ceiling is high, which is why he landed a $4.5 million deal to back up Richardson in Indianapolis this past season. However, he wouldn’t be a good fit in Pittsburgh even if both Wilson and Fields walk in free agency. The 40-year-old is at his best when he has a good receiving corps that can attack downfield and an offensive line that can keep him clean in the pocket. The Steelers have neither right now. Fields and Wilson were largely functional because of their dual-threat ability, while Flacco is a pure pocket passer…

“The Steelers ranked 23rd in total offense and 16th in scoring in 2024 despite Wilson and Fields throwing only six interceptions combined. A rebuilding team might be able to tolerate Flacco’s inconsistent ball security, but Pittsburgh can’t.”
Flacco would be an interesting fit as a backup if the Steelers brought Fields back. But, everything is just speculation and hypotheticals at this point.
