Paul Skenes continues to make history for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The rookie sensation has been unbelievable this season. First, he had a dominant first few starts, and then he started the MLB All-Star Game. Following his 20th start on Monday, Skenes now has a Pittsburgh rookie strikeout record.
With his 143rd strikeout against the Miami Marlins, the 22-year-old has the most strikeouts by a Pirates rookie since 1900. His number continues to climb, as he finished his start Monday with 151 strikeouts. The righty finished his 20th start pitching six innings, allowing just one run while striking out nine, and surrendering just one run on six hits. The dominance has been unmatched as the leader of the Pirates pitching staff, helping the team earn their second straight win by defeating the Marlins by a score of 3-2.

Overall on the season, Skenes sits at 10-2 with a minuscule 2.10 ERA. His 2.10 ERA leads all starting pitchers in the majors with at least 20 starts. Add in the aforementioned 151 strikeouts, a 0.99 WHIP, and 0.68 FIP to further appreciate what the pitcher is doing in his first major league campaign for the Pirates.

With 18 games left in the 2024 campaign, Skenes should be able to make two or three more starts before the season’s end.
