Steelers Sign Tight End To Big Extension Ahead Of Season Opener

Pat Freiermuth is here to stay

The Pittsburgh Steelers are making moves to retain key pieces of their offense.

After adding Russell Wilson at quarterback, the Steelers have been shoring up the rest of their offense. Pittsburgh has been looking to trade for a receiver to pair with George Pickens. Behind Pickens, the next best pass catcher on the team is tight end Pat Freiermuth.

The Steelers drafted Freiermuth in the second round of the 2021 draft from Penn State. He has become a dependable piece to the offense. In his first three seasons with Pittsburgh, he has tallied 155 receptions for 1,537 yards and 11 touchdowns.

To retain the tight end, Pittsburgh signed Freiermuth to a four-year extension according to Sports Illustrated’s Jacob Punturi.

“Over his first three seasons in the league, he’s become the team’s most dependable TE and is now locked in for years to come,” Punturi reported. “The deal is worth $48.4 million, and will keep Freiermuth in the Steel City for another four years. The new deal makes him the seventh-highest paid TE in the league based on total value and ninth-highest from an average annual value standpoint.”

“2024 figures to be a huge year for Freiermuth. Armed with a new contract extension and an improved quarterback situation, he aims to prove himself as one of the top TEs in the NFL.”

The Steelers value Freiermuth and believe he has an upside which is why they are locking him up through 2028. With improved quarterback play this season and an Arthur Smith system that heavily utilizes tight ends, Freiermuth should see a significant amount of targets in the offense this season.
