The Pittsburgh Pirates certainly were active ahead of the 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline.
Pittsburgh currently has a 56-54 record and is right in the mix for a National League Wild Card spot. The Pirates have surprised the baseball world with their stellar play this year and are loaded with some exciting young talent.
The Pirates could be back in the playoffs this year and could be a threat for years to come as their young talent gets even more big-league experience under their belt. It’s certainly an exciting time to be a Pirates fan.
Pittsburgh was extremely active ahead of the trade deadline and was linked to a handful of players as it attempted to bolster its offense ahead of the stretch run. The Pirates pulled off a few trades and are in a better place than they were in, but they almost got done another trade. Pittsburgh was linked to former Miami Marlins All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. and “nearly landed” him, according to USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale.
“No one has made a bigger impact at the trade deadline than Jazz Chisholm of the Yankees,” Nightengale said. “He’s hit .368 (7 for 19) with four homers, eight RBI, and a 1.400 OPS in his first four games, with the Yankees winning all of them. The Pittsburgh Pirates, who nearly landed Chisholm, are left wondering whether he could have had the same impact with them.”

Pittsburgh was linked to Chisholm on numerous occasions as the deadline approached but missed out as the Yankees swooped in and got a deal done. It would’ve been great if the Pirates could’ve landed him, but the fact that Pittsburgh at least was in the mix is a positive because it shows that the front office is willing to invest in this young core as it attempts to take the next step.
