Former Pirates Pitcher Announces Retirement With Emotional Instagram Post

He helped the Texas Rangers win a World Series

Former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Andrew Heaney announced his retirement in an emotional Instagram post on Sunday.

Heaney, 34, is calling it a career after a dozen MLB seasons. He pitched for six teams during his career, including the Pirates this year during his final season.

The ninth overall pick of the 2012 MLB Draft, Heaney debuted with the Miami Marlins in 2014. He also pitched for the Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers, spending seven seasons with the Angels.

Heaney helped the Rangers win their first World Series championship in franchise history in 2023, winning a career-high 10 games during the regular season before contributing 11 postseason innings during their historic title run.

The veteran left-hander struggled during his lone season with Pittsburgh this year, going 5-10 with a 5.39 ERA before losing his rotation spot and being released in August. He joined the Dodgers for the stretch run, pitching two innings for the eventual World Series champs.

While Heaney’s one-year deal for the Pirates didn’t work out as hoped, he still helped mentor some of the younger pitchers on the staff and remained a good teammate despite his struggles, accepting a move to the bullpen for the sake of the team.

In his Instagram post, Heaney says he plans to focus more on “being a husband, father, family man and active member of my community” in retirement. He also thanked everyone who supported him throughout his career and vowed to “give back more than I received.”
