Mike Tomlin Extended Epic Streak With Steelers’ Wild Week 16 Win

Pittsburgh improved to 9-6

Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers continued their winning ways on Sunday.

The Steelers inched closer to a possible playoff berth with a 29-24 victory over the Detroit Lions. Pittsburgh improved to 9-6, maintaining an impressive benchmark for Tomlin.

With two games remaining, Tomlin secured his 19th consecutive season without a losing record. The Steelers haven’t gone worse than 8-8 since the head coach replaced Bill Cowher in 2007, and the Steelers haven’t had a losing season since going 6-10 in 2003, the year before they drafted Ben Roethlisberger.

Pittsburgh’s ninth win didn’t come easily. The Steelers came dangerously close to blowing a 12-point, fourth-quarter lead for the first time in Tomlin’s career when the Lions drove to the end zone in the final seconds.

Fans at Ford Field twice thought they witnessed a go-ahead touchdown, but offensive pass interference penalties negated both. Isaac TeSlaa was called for setting an illegal pick to clear space for Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was at the center of a chaotic final play.

Corralled short of the end zone after a catch, St. Brown lateraled the ball to quarterback Jared Goff, who leaped into the end zone. Officials deemed the play a touchdown, but they also flagged the star wide receiver for pushing off before the reception.

The Steelers thus escaped with a dramatic victory, tallying 481 total yards on the road. Tomlin earned his 200th career win as Pittsburgh’s head coach when including the playoffs.

However, Tomlin isn’t taking much time to celebrate the milestone. He said after the game, per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, that the Steelers will get right back to work in preparation for a Week 17 matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

“We’re coming in tomorrow to watch the tape,” Tomlin said. “We don’t have time for victory Mondays.”
