Steelers Named As Trade Destination For Veteran QB Next Season

Pittsburgh may be looking for an Aaron Rodgers replacement

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is playing well this season, but there is a chance he won’t be back with the team next year.

Rodgers is currently in a one-year contract and will turn 42 at the beginning of next season. This means he might consider retiring at the end of this season.

If Rodgers doesn’t return to Pittsburgh, the Steelers could be looking to add another veteran quarterback, but this time through a trade rather than a free-agent signing.

USA Today’s Jacob Camenker named possible 2026 landing spots for San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Mac Jones and labeled the Steelers as a fit.

“Aaron Rodgers is 41 years old, and he holds just a one-year deal with the Steelers,” Camenker wrote on Monday. “Pittsburgh will still have Mason Rudolph and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard under contract in 2026, but the team may need to add a more proven starter to compete with the unit.”

Jones is playing his first season with the 49ers and has stepped in to start eight games because Brock Purdy has been dealing with a toe injury. So far this season, Jones has thrown for 2,151 yards and connected for 13 touchdowns.

This offseason, Jones inked a two-year contract worth $8.4 million, meaning that if the 49ers don’t decide to release him — something they probably won’t — then the Steelers would need to trade for him.
