Steelers Labeled As Trade Fits For Veteran QB In 2026

'This might be Mac Jones' preferred destination'

The Pittsburgh Steelers might consider a new starting quarterback for next season, as Aaron Rodgers is under contract for only one year.

Rodgers will turn 42 in December, so he could retire, leaving the Steelers without a chance to re-sign him. If Pittsburgh can’t land a top rookie quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft, it could look to add a veteran.

San Francisco 49ers On SI writer Grant Cohn thinks Pittsburgh could trade for quarterback Mac Jones.

“Aaron Rodgers will be a free agent after this season and could retire,” Cohn wrote on Friday. “Even if he wants to keep playing, the Steelers might want someone younger. Theoretically, they could trade for Jones and give him a modest extension at the same time, and he wouldn’t have to compete for the job. This might be Jones’ preferred destination.”

Jones has started eight games this season, with starting quarterback Brock Purdy dealing with a toe injury. Jones has thrown for 2,151 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions.

The 27-year-old quarterback signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract this offseason, making him an affordable option against the Steelers’ salary cap. However, trading for him could require a significant investment of high draft picks.
