Penguins Linked As Potential Landing Spot For Free Agent Center

Pittsburgh could bolster its bottom-six

The Pittsburgh Penguins could look to add to their roster and add some more depth to the forward group.

Pittsburgh is off to a 9-5-4 start and is in third place in the Metropolitan Division. However, the Penguins could use some help in the bottom six, and NHL insiders Chris Johnston and Marco Rossi of The Athletic named Pittsburgh as one of four landing spots for veteran forward David Kampf.

“The main connection here is Penguins GM Kyle Dubas, who originally brought Kampf to Toronto,” the insiders wrote, in a piece published on Friday. “Dubas signed him in free agency, coming off a season where Kämpf scored only one goal with the Chicago Blackhawks, and helped breathe new life into his career. With Pittsburgh off to an unexpectedly strong start this season, would another trusted veteran make sense for the Penguins?”

The insiders believe Kampf would stabilize the bottom of the Penguins’ line and be part of a shutdown line and play well defensively.

Kampf is a free agent after he and the Toronto Maple Leafs agreed to terminate his contract. He was in the third year of his four-year, $9.6 million deal, but after he failed to make the roster, he agreed to walk away from his contract to get a chance to play in the NHL.

Kampf is 30 years old and last season with Toronto, he recorded five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 59 games.

The Penguins will return to the ice on Sunday against the Nashville Predators in the second game of the Global Series Sweden.
