NFL Insider Makes Bold Prediction About Steelers’ Quarterback Competition

Who will be under center Week 1?

There’s a lot to like about the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Training camp officially is here and the Steelers certainly are a team to look out for in 2024. The Steelers won 10 games last year and should be significantly better in 2024. Pittsburgh made a handful of additions but the two most prominent certainly have been the additions of Justin Fields and Russell Wilson.

Wilson has been the expected starter since joining Pittsburgh and it has been speculated that Fields could sit in 2024 and then be the team’s quarterback afterward. Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion who showed last year that he still has a lot left in the tank with the Denver Broncos.

Fields is just 25 years old and has shown a lot of promise and got better in each of his three seasons with the Chicago Bears. No matter what, things are looking up for the Steelers.

It has been expected that Wilson would be the team’s starter, but a calf injury could open the door for at least a question about Fields. ESPN’s Dan Graziano even reported that Pittsburgh’s starting job is more up for grabs than many expected.

“It’s a lot more of a coin flip than most think, and I believe that part of the reason the Steelers have set Wilson up as the leader in the competition is because they believe that’s the best way to manage him,” Graziano said. “But I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Fields will show enough through camp to catch him and claim the Week 1 starting spot. I know most people disagree, and I am fully prepared to be wrong. But the vibes didn’t start off great for Wilson, and I just think the Steelers are going to be too tempted by Fields’ upside once they see them both out there. The question then would become whether Wilson is on the team at all.”

Pittsburgh is in a good spot and should be better in 2024 whether it has Wilson or Fields under center Week 1. All in all, Steelers fans should be excited right now.
