Report: Steelers Reuniting Aaron Rodgers With Former Teammate

He'll presumably start on the practice squad

Following prior speculation, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly landed a wide receiver familiar with Aaron Rodgers.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling signed with the Steelers on Monday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. He’s with the team in Pittsburgh following a Week 9 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Shortly after Fowler’s report, the Steelers released cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. from the practice squad. The move could clear a spot for Valdes-Scantling.

Fowler said last week that Valdes-Scantling was close to signing, presumably on the practice squad. Rodgers speculated that his former Green Bay Packers teammate was waiting for an opportunity to join an active roster.

“I love MVS,” Rodgers said last Wednesday. “I’ve always enjoyed playing with him. He’s one of my favorite teammates of all time. He is a really special guy.”

MVS spent the first four seasons of his career playing alongside Rodgers. The big-play threat averaged 17.5 yards per catch over 59 games, scoring 13 of his 20 career touchdowns for Green Bay.

The former fifth-round pick recorded a career-high 690 receiving yards and six touchdowns during Rodgers’ 2020 MVP campaign. Valdes-Scantling left the Packers one year before Rodgers, winning back-to-back Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs before splitting time between the Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints in 2024.

Valdes-Scantling caught four of eight targets for 40 yards in six games with the San Francisco 49ers before getting released on Oct. 18. His experience with Rodgers and Pittsburgh’s need for receiving depth made the Steelers a logical fit.

The addition likely won’t deter the Steelers from pursuing further receiving help before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
