Pirates Called Potential Landing Spot For Rays Batting Champ At Deadline

What's next for Pittsburgh?

The Pittsburgh Pirates have two days to add to the offense if they are hoping to get something done ahead of the 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline.

Pittsburgh has been impressive this season and is right in the middle of the National League Wild Card race. The trade deadline is set to pass on July 30th and deals already have been popping up left and right. If the Pirates want to boost the offense, they may need to act quickly.

One player who recently was mentioned as a possible target for the Pirates is Tampa Bay Rays All-Star and 2023 American League batting champion Yandy Díaz by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

“The Rays are expected to listen on Yandy Díaz,” Feinsand said. “Per sources, the (Houston Astros), (Seattle Mariners), and Pirates are potential landing spots.”

Díaz has appeared in 96 games so far this season and is slashing .272/.327/.400 with nine home runs and 47 RBIs. He led the American League with a .330 batting average last year as he earned his first All-Star nod. He has seen time at first base, third base, second base, and left field throughout his big league career but mainly is a first baseman.

Tampa Bay certainly is open for business and it wouldn’t be shocking to see Díaz get moved. Tampa Bay already has completed one major trade by sending All-Star Isaac Paredes to the Chicago Cubs so it wouldn’t be shocking to see Díaz get moved. If the Pirates could land him, they would be in good shape.
