Marquez Valdes-Scantling might not join the Pittsburgh Steelers after all.
The 31-year-old receiver had a workout with Pittsburgh on Monday, and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler later reported that Valdes-Scantling intends to sign with the Steelers and likely start on the practice squad.
Valdes-Scantling still hadn’t signed the contract as of Thursday morning, and Aaron Rodgers offered some insight into why he believed the deal hadn’t come together.
“I love MVS,” Rodgers said on Wednesday, via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “I think MVS wants to be on an active roster, so if there wasn’t an opportunity here for that, then I guess he’s waiting for something else.”
Rodgers knows Valdes-Scantling well, having played alongside him on the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2021. They teamed up to achieve a total of 123 receptions, accumulating 2,153 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns in 59 games.

Valdes-Scantling still has a chance to sign with Pittsburgh, as NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Tuesday that he expects a deal next week.
However, after Rodgers’ comments, the veteran wide receiver is likely still testing the waters and holding out for a spot on an active roster before signing to Pittsburgh’s practice squad.
