The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t get the result they wanted when they suffered a 33-31 defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football in Week 7, but they still are sitting pretty in the AFC North with a 4-2 record heading into Week 8. A big reason for their hot start to the season has been the play of Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
After a rumor-filled offseason, Rodgers eventually ended up signing a one-year, $13.65 million contract with the Steelers in free agency after he had been released by the New York Jets. Through six games, Rodgers has 1,270 yards and 14 touchdowns, and considering how poorly things went for him in 2024, he’s looked better than anyone could have reasonably expected.
Pittsburgh knew that its marriage to Rodgers could last only one year, as the legendary quarterback made it seem like the 2025 campaign would be his final one in the NFL. However, given how well he’s played, a recent report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN indicates that the Steelers want to bring Rodgers back to be their starting quarterback again for the 2026 season.
“Rodgers’ stint in Pittsburgh has gone so well that the team could rethink its 2026 quarterback plans,” Fowler wrote. “The Steelers will scour the draft market for the QB of the future, for sure. They are already doing so. But if you ask people with the team whether they’d entertain the notion of Rodgers in the black-and-gold in 2026, the answer would be a resounding yes.”
A lot could happen over the remainder of the 2025 season. Rodgers’ play could drop off, which could cause the team to reconsider its stance, or they could identify a prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft that they feel could become their franchise quarterback. At the end of the day, though, it’s clear that the idea of Rodgers sticking around beyond this season isn’t as crazy as it once seemed.
