MLB Trade Rumors: Pirates’ Division Rival May Shop Ace This Offseason

Hunter Greene may be on the move this winter

The Pittsburgh Pirates don’t have much going on right now as they wait for the offseason to heat up, but they did get some potentially good news on Tuesday.

In a recent article for MLB.com, Cincinnati Reds beat writer Mark Sheldon speculated that the Reds may be open to moving Hunter Greene this winter, which would be good news for the Pirates if he gets traded outside the NL Central.

Greene, 26, is Cincinnati’s ace and one of the best pitchers in baseball when healthy. Over the past two seasons, he’s 16-9 with a 2.76 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP and 301 strikeouts in 258 innings over 45 starts.

The hard-throwing right-hander has dominated Pittsburgh throughout his career, too, posting a 2.57 ERA with 66 strikeouts in 49 career innings against them.

Greene, who’s under contract through at least 2028, would be attractive for a team like the Boston Red Sox, who are looking for another elite arm to pair with Garrett Crochet.

With the Reds coming off a playoff berth, it would be surprising to see them move off Greene this offseason when they still have him locked up for a few more years. He’s been injury-prone, however, and has averaged just 124 innings per season since debuting in 2022, so perhaps they’ll consider at least listening to trade offers for their All-Star hurler.

It will be interesting to see what happens wth Greene this winter, so his situation is definitely something for Pirates fans to monitor going forward.
