Penguins Coach Explains Opening Night Surprise Goalie Decision

A surprise move to start the season

The Pittsburgh Penguins open their 2025-26 season on Tuesday night against the New York Rangers.

Coach Dan Muse made a surprising announcement during the team’s morning skate ahead of the game, deciding to start offseason acquisition Arturs Silovs in goal over two-time All-Star Tristan Jarry.

“We looked at a lot of things. And I feel like I should state this: We are going to be looking for both guys to get in there at this early part of the season. So Tristan will be getting an opportunity here early on, for sure,” the first-year coach said, according to Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazettte. “We feel like Silovs had a good camp, and that was the decision that we made.”

The Penguins selected Jarry in the second round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and he made his debut with the team during the 2016-17 season.

The 30-year-old has started each of the last five season openers for Pittsburgh and got the nod in the team’s preseason finale on Friday.

Silovs was acquired by the Penguins in a July trade with the Vancouver Canucks for right-wing Chase Stillman and a 2027 fourth-round pick.

The NHL campaign begins on Tuesday night with a season-opening tripleheader and Pittsburgh’s former longtime head coach Mike Sullivan’s Rangers welcoming the Penguins to Madison Square Garden for an 8 p.m. ET opening faceoff.
