Steelers Reportedly Sign Former Giants Wide Receiver After Week 2 Loss

Pittsburgh appears to have beefed up its WR room

The Pittsburgh Steelers were dealt a tough loss in Week 2, as the Seattle Seahawks defeated them by a score of 31-17. It wasn’t a particularly encouraging performance after the Steelers prevailed in their battle with the New York Jets in Week 1, and it looks like the front office is taking matters into its own hands.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding Pittsburgh’s roster heading into the new season was the lack of true playmakers they have on offense. DK Metcalf is a de facto No. 1 wide receiver, but beyond him, there aren’t many options for quarterback Aaron Rodgers to consistently throw to in the passing game.

On Tuesday, the Steelers reportedly made a move in an effort to get Rodgers some more help on offense. That led to them signing former New York Giants wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins in free agency, with the hope being that he could emerge as a secondary target in Pittsburgh’s aerial attack.

“Sources: Former Giants WR Isaiah Hodgins is signing with the Steelers. Some added WR depth for Aaron Rodgers,” Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported in a post on X.

After breaking into the league as a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft with the Buffalo Bills, Hodgins latched on with the Giants, where he managed to carve out a role for himself in their passing game. In 28 games over three seasons with New York, Hodgins caught 56 passes for 593 yards and seven touchdowns.

Hodgins certainly isn’t a game-wrecker, but he could give Rodgers another option in the passing game if opposing defenses are locking in on Metcalf. Assuming the team announces the move in the near future, Hodgins could have a shot at suiting up immediately in Week 3 when the Steelers take on the New England Patriots.
