Steelers Scout Star College Quarterbacks Two Straight Weeks

Pittsburgh has its eyes on John Mateer

The Pittsburgh Steelers have their eyes on some top quarterback prospects slated for the 2026 NFL Draft.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer was scouted by the organization during each of the last two weekends — where he led his current club to victories over the Michigan Wolverines at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium (Week 2) and the Temple Owls at Lincoln Financial Field (Week 3).

Clemson Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik has also played in front of team representatives twice this season — which included losses to the LSU Tigers at Memorial Stadium (Week 1) and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Bobby Dodd Stadium (Week 3).

Steelers Now’s Alan Saunders was first to point out the scouting news.

The Steelers have been busy doing their homework on notable collegiate quarterbacks, including Pittsburgh’s Eli Holstein, Kansas State’s Avery Johnson, Arizona’s Noah Fifita and Georgia Tech’s Haynes King.

Mateer and Klubnik are expected to be near the top of the quarterback prospect list come draft season, with the former coming in at No. 8 and the latter coming in at No. 4 on the consensus big board for the 2026 NFL Draft.

Pittsburgh is already preparing for life after Aaron Rodgers, though they’re hoping the transition is eased following a successful tenure.
