How Steelers Reportedly Reacted To Justin Fields Big Game In Week 1

Fields starred in New York's loss to Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the New York Jets in a surprise thriller in Week 1, with the final score settling in at 34-32. Aaron Rodgers managed to get the better of his former team in his first game with the Steelers, but on the other side of the ball, Justin Fields made quite an impression on his old team, too.

Fields spent the 2024 campaign with Pittsburgh, leading them to a 4-2 record in the first games of the season before he was replaced under center by Russell Wilson. When he hit free agency this offseason, the Steelers ultimately decided to let Fields walk, and he signed with the Jets.

In his first start with New York, Fields carved up Pittsburgh’s highly touted defense, throwing for 218 yards and a touchdown, while also running for 48 yards and another pair of scores. The Steelers are thrilled to have Rodgers in town, but they also were reportedly quick to take note of what Fields was doing for the Jets.

“Last year, when the Steelers had both Wilson and Justin Fields, coach Mike Tomlin made the switch from Fields to Wilson six games in, despite some internal pushback and with the Steelers 4-2. Fields had plenty of supporters in the locker room and even on the staff,” Dianna Russini of The Athletic wrote.

“So when the Steelers lined up against the Jets last week and saw Fields on the other sideline — playing refreshed, decisive and free — let’s just say there were more than a few people saying ‘told ya so’ inside the organization.”

There’s no doubt that Rodgers gives Pittsburgh a better shot of going on a Super Bowl run this season, but should the organization have given Fields a longer look at quarterback? Ultimately, there’s no sense crying over spilled milk, and the Steelers will be looking to pick up their second victory of the season in Week 2 when they take on the Seattle Seahawks.
