Marc-Andre Fleury will, somewhat officially, call it a career back where it all started.
The Pittsburgh Penguins legend is signing a Professional Tryout Contract with the team, general manager Kyle Dubas announced Friday. He’ll practice with the team on Friday, Sept. 26, and will play in parts of their preseason game the next day.
“Marc means so much to our team, our fans and the City of Pittsburgh because of the person he is and the example he set,” Dubas said in a statement. “The Penguins feel he and his family are most-deserving of this opportunity to celebrate this full-circle moment back where it all started in front of the black and gold faithful.”
Fleury spent 13 of his 22 NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, and in the process set Penguins goaltending records while guiding them to three Stanley Cups.
Fleury retired in the offseason after a run with the Minnesota Wild, who he joined during the 2021-22 campaign. Getting to return to Pittsburgh and hit the ice in a Penguins uniform one more time, even if it’s in the preseason, is a more-than-deserved honor for Fleury.
