Pirates Issue Flurry Of Injury And Transaction Updates

Oneil Cruz hit the IL on Wednesday

The Pittsburgh Pirates have had a tough season. Expectations weren’t sky high entering the year, but injuries have only lessened playoff hopes.

On Wednesday, the team made a transaction and issued updates on the injured players’ progress.

The most notable move was placing outfielder Oneil Cruz on the 7-day concussion injured list. In his place, the team recalled Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis. Cruz left Tuesday’s game in the sixth inning after colliding with outfielder Jack Suwinski as they each attempted to make a diving catch.

Simon led off in the Pirates’ 12-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday and went 2-5 with two runs scored. It was his first game for Pittsburgh after being claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins.

The team also announced that catcher Endy Rodriguez underwent an ulnar nerve transposition surgery on Tuesday. The surgery ends Rodriguez’s season, but he hopes to be ready by spring training next year.

Rodriguez hit .173 in 18 games this season. The switch-hitting catcher never had a chance to get in a rhythm offensively, spending multiple stints on the injured list early in the season.
