Steelers Workout Russell Wilson’s Former Backup Before Training Camp

DiNucci has played in three NFL games

Could the Pittsburgh Steelers add another quarterback to the room? It seems possible after Tuesday.

Pittsburgh will kick off training camp on Wednesday, marking the start of the 2024 NFL season grind. The biggest story heading into camp will be about the quarterbacks, as the team enters this season with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields leading the charge after a disappointing couple of years with Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett being the options.

Overall, Pittsburgh currently has four quarterbacks on the roster with Wilson, Fields, six-year veteran Kyle Allen, and rookie John Rhys Plumlee — who was recently drafted in the United Football League draft third overall. The Steelers could stay pat, but the team did work out another passer on Tuesday.

KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson reported on X that the Steelers brought quarterback Ben DiNucci in for a workout ahead of training camp on Tuesday. He was last with the Denver Broncos in the 2023 season, serving as the third-string quarterback and backup for Wilson.

DiNucci was drafted in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent three seasons with them, which included one start, before heading to the XFL to play for the Seattle Dragons in 2023.

His NFL statistics include three total appearances, throwing for 219 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions back in 2020. In the XFL, the 27-year-old started 10 games for Seattle, throwing for 2,671 yards and 20 touchdowns during his stint. That’d help earn him a shot back in the NFL when he joined the Broncos last season. He was waived by Denver on May 8 earlier this year.

No deal was signed as of Tuesday night, but the familiarity of being in the same QB room as Wilson might give DiNucci a leg up if the Steelers do decide to add another passer.
