The Pittsburgh Penguins made a trade on Thursday, acquiring veteran defenseman Matthew Dumba and a 2028 second-round draft pick from the Dallas Stars in exchange for defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok.
The 24-year-old Kolyachonok’s stay with the Penguins lasted just five months, as he was selected off waivers from the Utah Hockey Club in February. Kolyachonok skated in 12 games for Pittsburgh, registering eight penalty minutes, eight shots on goal and two assists while posting a -5 plus/minus.
Dumba was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and spent 10 seasons with the franchise before splitting the 2023-24 campaign between the Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning. He signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Stars last July.
The 30-year-old was the seventh overall pick at the 2012 event, which was held in Pittsburgh.
The trade comes as a cost-cutting move for Dallas, as noted by Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac.
Dumba finished last season with 10 points on one goal and nine assists across 63 games. The 2019-2020 King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner also recorded 60 blocked shots, which ranked fifth on the Stars.

Dumba didn’t appear in any of Dallas’ 18 Stanley Cup Playoff contests, though he does have 54 games of postseason experience, registering 15 points via five goals and 10 assists. He’s recorded 258 career points (84 goals, 174 assists) over 737 career regular season games.
Thursday’s transaction continues what’s been a busy start to the offseason for general manager Kyle Dubas and company.
Pittsburgh re-signed forwards Philip Tomasino and Connor Dewar to one-year contracts on July 1 (the first day of free agency) and inked former Boston Bruins defenseman Parker Wotherspoon to a two-year deal that day as well. The Penguins also traded goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic, who started 35 games last season, serving as the primary backup to Tristan Jarry.
