Steelers Pat Freiermuth Named ‘Player To Watch’ Headed Into Training Camp

Will he have a bounce back year?

The 2024-2025 National Football League season almost is upon us, with teams around the league headed to training camp.

The Pittsburgh Steelers begin training camp on Thursday, July 25th, and with it, fans will get their first look at the many new faces joining the team. The new-look Steelers include offseason additions such as Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Donte Jackson, and Patrick Queen.

Even with all these intriguing new players, Pro Football Focus has tight end Pat Freiermuth as the player to watch heading into training camp according to Bradley Locker.

“A whole lot will look different in the Steelers’ offense this year, including at quarterback, receiver, offensive line, and even play-caller. Where Freiermuth fits into that mix will be thoroughly interesting,” Locker said. “Freiermuth must carve out a more clearly defined role in Arthur Smith’s offense, which relies heavily on 12 personnel. Pittsburgh will also need him to look much more like his 2022 self, especially considering there seem to be few reliable receiving targets alongside George Pickens.”

Pat Freiermuth finished the 2023 season with 308 yards on 32 receptions and two touchdowns as he dealt with injuries throughout the season. This level of production was a stark difference as Freiermuth had 60-plus receptions in both seasons prior. With Arthur Smith taking the reins in Pittsburgh, Freiermuth should be in line for a bigger role in the offense.

Arthur Smith likes to use his tight ends in his offense which will benefit Freiermuth. In addition, the Steelers will have a better quarterback under center with Russell Wilson. With the departure of Diontae Johnson, Freiermuth will be essentially functioning as the Steelers No.2 pass-catcher.

All these factors could lead to a huge season for Pat Freiermuth where he can prove why the Steelers used a second-round pick. With this perfect situation, he can get back to being one of the better tight ends in the league.
