NFL Insider Shoots Down Steelers-Dolphins Trade Rumors For Star Defender

Jalen Ramsey appears headed elsewhere

The Pittsburgh Steelers recently have been linked to one of the best defensive players in the NFL. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they’re going to land him.

The Steelers have been involved in trade rumors for Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey this offseason, getting Pittsburgh fans excited about a potential defensive upgrade. However, NFL insider Adam Schefter poured cold water on those rumors during his appearance on Tuesday’s episode of ESPN’s “Unsportsmanlike” radio show.

“I think Pittsburgh checked in. I’m not so sure that Pittsburgh’s gonna be the destination,” Schefter said. “In fact, if I had to guess, I would say Pittsburgh would not be the likely destination.”

Schefter believes Ramsey is more likely to end up with the Los Angeles Rams or Chargers. Ramsey played for the Rams from 2019 to 2022, helping them win a Super Bowl during the 2021 campaign.

The 30-year-old is under contract through 2028 after signing a three-year, $72.3 million extension with the Dolphins last September, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. His Miami tenure has been a mild disappointment, however, as he only played 10 games in 2023 and failed to make the Pro Bowl last season.

That said, the seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro is still considered one of the best pass defenders in the league, ranking 16th out of 222 cornerbacks last year according to PFF.

The Steelers certainly could use a player of Ramsey’s caliber. Their secondary was among the worst in the NFL last year, ranking 25th in passing yards allowed. Unfortunately, he’s likely headed elsewhere based on Schefter’s report.

That may be best for Pittsburgh in the long run, however, as Ramsey is expensive and getting older. While he could be a good short-term solution, the Steelers are probably better off pursuing a younger, more cost-effective upgrade.
