The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of a handful of NHL clubs with head coach vacancies across the league.
The process appears to be going relatively slowly because Peguins president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas is in Sweden with Team Canada as they compete for gold in the 2025 IIHF World Championship.
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is helping lead Team Canada with one goal and three assists for four points in three games in the international tournament. However, the legendary forward is staying far away from the coaching search.
“I don’t have any say on who our next coach is going to be. And I prefer it that way,” Crosby told The Athletic’s Josh Yohe. “Because, ultimately, I’m a hockey player. I’m not out there coaching games. I’m not a manager.”
The 20-year NHL veteran is one of the greatest hockey players of all time, so his opinion could matter if Dubas were to lean on Crosby for his input.

“If he wants my opinion on someone who’s out there, and someone out there that I may have had as a coach before or someone I’ve heard about, then sure, then I’ll share my opinion,” Crosby said.
As far as the type of coach Crosby would like to play for in Pittsburgh? That’s of little importance to him, and he has faith that Dubas will make the right decision.
“It really doesn’t matter. I don’t care,” he said. “I really don’t. I just want to win, and I want the person behind the bench who is going to give us the best chance to win.
“Kyle’s going to have decisions to make. He’s going to do what is best for this team.”
