Steelers Owner Makes Statement After First-Rounder Experiences Tragedy

Derrick Harmon's mother died on draft night

Derrick Harmon experienced the highest of highest and lowest of lows on draft night.

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Harmon with the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday night. However, shortly after hearing his name called, Harmon’s mother died.

Steelers owner and president Art Rooney II on Friday evening released a statement:

“On behalf of the entire Pittsburgh Steelers organization, I extend our deepest condolences to Derrick Harmon and his family during this difficult time,” the statement read.

“Though we are excited to select Derrick in the first round of the NFL Draft, our hearts are heavy as we mourn the death of his mother, Tiffany Saine. We will support Derrick and his family however we can as he navigates this period of grief. In times like this, we hope Derrick finds comfort in the love and support from the organization and Steelers fans around the world.”

Saine suffered a stroke, which paralyzed her left side, during Harmon’s freshman year at Michigan State. Harmon reportedly cancelled several pre-draft visits to stay by her side.

The 2025 NFL Draft continues Friday night with the Steelers holding a third-round pick (No. 83 overall).
