Thursday marked a special day on the mound for Pittsburgh Pirates starter Andrew Heaney.
The veteran left-hander officially hit 10 years of MLB service time, a significant milestone for any big-leaguer and crucial for setting up life after baseball. Heaney took the ball for the Pirates in the series finale against the Washington Nationals and rode the momentum of his milestone.
Pittsburgh earned a 1-0 win over Washington in the series finale. The Pirates got an exceptional start from Heaney, who tallied 7 1/3 scoreless innings with just five hits and two walks allowed. The lefty struck out four Nationals in his excellent start to earn the victory and end a series that already featured fireworks with an exclamation point.
Heaney earned his first victory in a Pirates uniform. Pittsburgh now welcomes the Cleveland Guardians to PNC Park for a three-game series this weekend.
