How Pirates’ Paul Skenes Fared In Opening Day Start

Skenes tossed 5 1/3 innings

Pirates ace Paul Skenes earned his first career Opening Day start and took the ball for Pittsburgh against the Miami Marlins.

Skenes worked through 5 1/3 innings with just three hits allowed. He surrendered two earned runs and two walks while he racked up seven strikeouts against the Marlins. The Pirates righty earned a no-decision in his first start of the season but flashed the signs of a solid first step.

Skenes leads an intriguing rotation with Jared Jones, Andrew Heaney and Mitch Keller with top prospect Bubba Chandler eventually on the way.

The Pirates eventually fell in a 5-4 loss Thursday when Miami’s Kyle Stowers delivered a walk-off single in the ninth inning at loanDepot Park.
