The focus of the pitching staff for the Pittsburgh Pirates centers around young, talented starters in Paul Skenes and Jared Jones as well as intriguing prospect Bubba Chandler.
Pittsburgh also has a former first-round talent taking his next crack at catching on in the big leagues in Carson Fulmer. The No. 8 overall pick to the Chicago White Sox in the 2015 MLB Draft dominated at Vanderbilt University. He co-starred with future World Series champion shortstop Dansby Swanson to bring the Commodores the national championship in 2014.
The Pirates are Fulmer’s sixth MLB franchise and he holds a 5.38 career ERA across eight seasons. Fulmer hopes Pittsburgh can finally unlock him, especially as he’s only entering his age-31 season, to reach his goals in the majors.
The right-hander allowed one run over two innings with two strikeouts as the Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles in spring training action Wednesday.
