Former Giants Quarterback Suggested As Potential Steelers Backup Fit

Who will the Steelers add?

The Pittsburgh Steelers absolutely are going to look different in 2025.

Clearly, the Steelers’ biggest decisions of the offseason are going to involve the quarterback position. Russell Wilson and Justin Field started at different times for Pittsburgh in 2024. The Steelers would be wise to bring at least one back to keep consistency. But, there’s no chance that both will return.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac took a look at the roster and dissected the quarterback spot. He noted that the Steelers have liked to have a backup quarterback with starting experience and floated former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones as a possible option.

“They have always preferred having a No. 2 quarterback with extensive experience, players such as Charlie Batch, Byron Leftwich, Mitch Trubisky and even Fields himself,” Dulac said. (Kyle Allen) is a good addition to the quarterback room, but he has started just four games the past five seasons and just 19 in his seven-year career.

“The Steelers signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson to a reserve/futures contract last week. But that was more of a temporary safeguard because all three quarterbacks were without contract. The best addition would be (Daniel Jones), the former New York Giants quarterback. And would the Steelers consider another reunion with Mason Rudolph?”

Jones will be an interesting guy to watch for this offseason. He showed flashes in New York, but injuries certainly hindered him. If the Steelers could bring him in on a cheap deal as a backup, maybe he would be worth a flier.
