The Steelers have big questions at quarterback, and a popular analyst thought he had the greatest idea to solve them.
Pittsburgh flamed out in the playoffs with a wild-card round loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Russell Wilson was fine for Mike Tomlin’s side this season, but the head coach acknowledged his team needed to be better in order to compete against the best teams.
Justin Fields is a potential option, but he’s yet to show he has the ability to turn his career around after five seasons. Aaron Rodgers is a fascinating option in free agency, and might be the most realistic given Pittsburgh’s in a tough spot with the No. 21 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Colin Cowherd wanted the Steelers to go bold.
“I would trade T.J. Watt, George Pickens and two first-round picks if your scouting department said Sheduer Sanders is the guy,” Cowherd said on “The Herd” on Thursday. “… I think the Steelers, they treat quarterback like a New Year’s resolution. They’re all gung ho about it, but by late February, you no longer want to go to the gym. And by late February, the Steelers aren’t really a viable team. It sounds good. There’s a lot of optimism, but you’re not going to the gym. I would trade T.J. Watt, George Pickens, two first rounders and go get Shedeur Sanders if you think he’s a starting QB.”
Cowherd believes the Steelers need to be proactive like the Kansas City Chiefs were with Patrick Mahomes, the Ravens with Lamar Jackson or the Green Bay Packers with Jordan Love. He noted that Pittsburgh hadn’t drafted a franchise QB since Ben Roethlisberger 21 years ago.

However, Pittsburgh fans likely would grimace at the idea of trading Watt, one of the few game-changing defensive players in the league. They might be done with Pickens, but Watt arguably is the heart and soul of the Steelers’ defense, and trading him for the allure of Sanders might not be worth it in some fans’ eyes.
