The Pirates struck deals Thursday.
Pittsburgh avoided arbitration with several players, including starting pitcher Bailey Falter, relief pitchers David Bednar and Colin Holderman, and catcher Joey Bart, according to several reports.
Falter is expected to make $2.222 million in 2025, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Bednar’s ($5.9 million), Holderman’s ($1.5 million) and Bart’s ($1.75 million) numbers were all reported by Alex Stumpf of MLB.com.
Falter, 27, is perhaps the most notable player listed, as he showed tremendous growth throughout 2024. The Pirates named him as their fifth starter for the season and were quickly rewarded with a strong showing during the first two months of the season in which he posted a 3.22 ERA. Pittsburgh worked with him through some mid-season struggles, which shot his numbers up before they eventually settled to an 8–9 record with a 4.43 ERA in 28 starts, striking out 97 batters in 142 1/3 innings.
Bednar, 30, had a down season in 2024, but the two-time All-Star should be able to bounce back from his 5.77 ERA. Holderman and Bart will compete for roles in 2025.
