Ben Cherington Reveals How Pirates Could Address Obvious Offseason Need

The Pittsburgh Pirates are right in the middle of things with the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings underway.

Pittsburgh finished with a 76-86 record in the 2024 season. They’ll look to make some key additions this offseason to bolster a team that carries plenty of excitement as it’s led by reigning National League Rookie of the Year pitcher Paul Skenes.

Additions on offense are where the Pirates need to add most — which general manager Ben Cherington is not only aware of but has outlined a plan for at the Winter Meetings on Monday.

“We’d like to add to the offense, and the most obvious places to do that would be corner outfield and first base,” Cherington said, per MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf. “It doesn’t mean it’s the only places we can do that, but we have a fair amount of positional flexibility with our current group where, if there are opportunities with position A, there is a good chance a player could move to position B. We can move guys around.”

One option to be moved, of course, is outfielder Bryan Reynolds — who has been removed to potentially move to first base, which is a position of need for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates have plenty of time to build their 2025 roster and specifically improve the offense.
