The Pittsburgh Pirates made a major addition to improve and develop their pitching staff by hiring assistant pitching coach Brent Strom.
Strom pitched in the big leagues for five seasons, playing for the New York Mets, Cleveland Guardians, and San Diego Padres before landing his first big league pitching job in 1996.
Strom is a great pitching coach with a pedigree of success. He most recently was a pitching coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and his former staffs have been represented in the World Series in four of the last eight seasons. Strom also has had multiple pitchers win Cy Young Awards under his coaching.
Pirates ace Paul Skenes already expressed his excitement about the Pirates’ hiring of Brent Strom as an assistant pitching coach and touted his ability to develop pitchers.
“I’ve heard nothing but great things about Stromie,” Skenes said. “I met him at the All-Star Game in Texas last summer, and it’s a really cool opportunity to have him on staff with (pitching coach) Oscar (Marin). Brent knows how to build pitchers. He also knows how to win, and he’s going to do everything in his power to help make that happen here.”

Pittsburgh’s pitching staff, headlined by ace Paul Skenes, was one of its bright spots this season. The Pirates have a great starting rotation around Skenes with Jared Jones, Mitch Keller, and Luis Ortiz. They also have many young pitching prospects to develop, like Bubba Chandler. Bringing in a pitching coach like Strom is a major addition for the Pirates.
