Pirates Reportedly Hire Brent Strom As New Assistant Pitching Coach

Strom is one of the best pitching minds in baseball

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a change to develop and improve their pitching staff this offseason.

The Pirates’ pitching staff excelled this season, headlined by rookie phenom Paul Skenes. Skenes is already in Cy Young contention as a rookie, and with Jared Jones, Mitch Keller, and Luis Ortiz rounding out the starting rotation, the Pirates have one of the top rotations in the league. The team added a new pitching coach to help further develop these young hurlers.

Pittsburgh reportedly made another coaching hire, reportedly hiring former Arizona Diamondbacks Brent Strom, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Noah Hiles.

“The Pirates have hired Brent Strom as an assistant pitching coach, a source told the Post-Gazette on Wednesday evening,” Hiles said. “Strom will coach games from the dugout. The Pirates are still looking to fill a pitching assistant role that will coach from the bullpen.”

“Viewed by some as one of the best pitching minds in baseball, Strom’s former staffs have been represented in the World Series in four of the last eight seasons. He spent the last three seasons as the Arizona Diamondbacks pitching coach before being fired last month. Prior to his time in Arizona, Strom served in the same role for the Houston Astros from 2014 through 2021, playing a notable role in their 2017 championship. Strom arrives in Pittsburgh to help improve an organization already filled with notable arm talent.”

Strom is a great pitching coach who will help develop the Pirates’ pitching staff and all their top pitching prospects. He has a pedigree of success and has had multiple pitchers win Cy Young Awards under his coaching. This is a great move for the Pirates organization.
