Here’s How New Steelers Receiver Mike Williams Could Impact Offense

Pittsburgh made the right call

The Pittsburgh Steelers certainly should be excited right now.

Pittsburgh is 6-2 on the season and is in first place in the AFC North. The season has had some ups-and-downs due in large part to injuries, but the team has been able to battle through and find ways to win games. Whether Justin Fields or Russell Wilson has been at quarterback, the Steelers have found ways to find success.

Now, things could get even easier.

Pittsburgh looked for a new wide receiver for months before it finally was able to land Mike Williams in a trade with the New York Jets ahead of the trade deadline. He could end up being exactly what the Steelers need. Pittsburgh’s offense clearly didn’t need to make too big of an addition as the team is 6-2, but Williams could be the perfect fit.

George Pickens has proven that he is a capable No. 1 receiver. Williams has been a great No. 2 in the past and could get back to that level of play. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers and was paired with Keenan Allen. Over that stretch, he had two seasons with over 1,000 yards and two others with over 750 yards.

Injuries have plagued him, but he is healthy now. What makes him a great receiver is his ability to stretch the defense and go after the deep ball. That’s why he led the National Football League with 20.4 yards per reception in 2019. Wilson loves to throw the deep ball and Williams immediately will become the top option for that type of play.

An offense featuring Pickens, Willian, Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, Pat Freiermuth, and Wilson certainly sounds good.
