Window For Steelers Linebacker To Return From Injured Reserve Opened

The Steelers could get an important depth piece back

The Pittsburgh Steelers are leading the AFC North with a 3-1 record after losing to the Indianapolis Colts this past weekend.

Despite the Steeler’s positive record, the team is dealing with some key injuries on the defensive side. Linebacker Alex Highsmith isn’t expected to return yet after missing Week 4 with a groin injury, and linebacker Nick Herbig is also dealing with an ankle injury from Week 4, which hopefully won’t keep him out of Week 5.

Pittsburgh should be getting linebacker help soon. The window has been opened for Jeremiah Moon to return from the injured reserve according to Sports Illustrated’s Noah Strackbein.

“The Pittsburgh Steelers have opened the return window for outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon, who started the season on Injured Reserve,” Strackbein reported. “While he remains on IR, he now has 21 days to return to practice and be activated. If they do not activate him within the window, he will revert to IR for the remainder of the season.”

“The Steelers could use outside linebacker help as they’re banged up with two key injuries. Alex Highsmith is not expected to return this week after missing Week 4 with a groin injury. He’ll test his practice availability, but Pittsburgh is planning for Herbig to play and start. Herbig is also dealing with an injury, leaving Week 4 for a shot period of time after hurting his ankle. Head coach Mike Tomlin said he will miss some time during the practice week but is expected to play.”

Pittsburgh can activate Moon as early as this week for their matchup against the Dallas Cowboys if he’s healthy, but can utilize the entire 21-day window if needed. Moon would be signed to the 53-man roster if he’s activated, working behind T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig. The Steelers could use the extra defensive help for their tough Week 5 matchup.
