Steelers Surprisingly Called Trade Option For Former First-Round Quarterback

Pittsburgh will be active over the next few weeks

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a clear effort to upgrade the quarterback position this past offseason and certainly did so.

Pittsburgh added not just one capable passer but two. The Steelers brought in former first-round pick Justin Fields and nine-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson. Fields has been under center with Wilson injured, and the team currently is 3-0. It seems like Pittsburgh is set at quarterback for the 2024 season and possibly even beyond.

Despite this, ESPN’s Dan Graziano called the Steelers a possible option to land fellow former first-round draft pick Zach Wilson in a trade with the Denver Broncos.

“He’s on a cheap deal, just turned 25, and he has spent the past six months learning under Denver coach Sean Payton,” Graziano said. “The No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Wilson is third on the Broncos’ depth chart behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham, and he could hold some appeal to another team as a developmental prospect. He has 33 career starts. but his QBR since 2021 is a very low 33.9.

“Potential landing spot: Los Angeles Rams. With (Jimmy Garoppolo) and Stetson Bennett behind (Matthew Stafford) on the depth chart, the Rams lack a high-ceiling developmental quarterback. You can question whether Wilson is that, but if coach Sean McVay were to think he could work with Wilson’s game, who knows? The Dolphins, Steelers, (Carolina Panthers), and (Tennessee Titans) could be other potential landing spots.”

Russell Wilson has been called a trade candidate, with Fields shining in the starting job. A deal for someone like Zach Wilson likely would only be in the cards if Pittsburgh made another move first involving the nine-time Pro Bowler. Anything can happen, but it would be a little surprising to see a deal get done.
