Aroldis Chapman Set New Pirates Reliever Record In First Season

Aroldis Chapman has proven to be a great signing for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season and has now set a team record.

Chapman set the single-season record for most strikeouts by a left-handed relief pitcher on Wednesday night when he earned his 95th punch out of the 2024 campaign.

The season was impressive for the lefty after signing a one-year deal in the offseason. Over 66 games, Chapman pitched 60 innings, totaling the aforementioned 95 strikeouts while posting a 5-5 record, 3.90 ERA, 108 ERA+, and 12 saves for Pittsburgh.

While there’s no word as to whether or not Chapman is in the conversation to return next season, he’s a player that the Pirates will want to consider considering their goals and aspirations for the upcoming 2024 Major League Baseball campaign. Despite being 36 years old, the reliever has shown no signs of slowing down with his velocity picking back up for much of the season.

The Pirates finish up their series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night before moving on to the final series of the 2024 regular season against the New York Yankees on Friday.
