Insider Suggests That Changes Could Be Coming To Pirates This Winter

What will the Pirates do this winter?

There isn’t much time left in the 2024 Major League Baseball regular season.

With just a few weeks left in the season, it’s clear that the Pittsburgh Pirates have shown something this year. Pittsburgh is headlined by plenty of young talent and they impressed this season. The Pirates unfortunately won’t be in the playoffs this season despite being in contention around the trade deadline, but there still have been positives.

Paul Skenes has taken the baseball world by storm and he isn’t the only young Pirates player to impress. Plus, the Pirates also added some intriguing talent around the deadline that will help in 2025. All in all, things are looking up for the Pirates. While this is the case, USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale suggested that there could be a change made at the manager position rather than the general manager spot if changes happen this winter.

“The Pittsburgh Pirates, who are enduring their sixth consecutive losing season, are much more likely to make changes with manager Derek Shelton or his coaching staff than with (general manager) Ben Cherington,” Nightengale said.

This doesn’t mean that a change will happen and Shelton will be let go. It does show that he is at more of a risk of losing his job than Cherington at this point. Pittsburgh currently has a 67-76 record and has struggled in the second half of the season, but it has still made progress in 2024.

If the Pirates add one or two pieces throughout the winter, they could be a playoff team in 2025 despite struggling in the second half. Maybe that could lead everyone to keep their jobs this winter.
