Steelers Announce 2024 Team Captains Ahead Of Season Opener

The Steelers named four captains for 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up with the 2024 National Football League season just days away.

After finishing 10-7 last season, the Steelers made it into the playoffs where they lost in the first round. Pittsburgh was active in the offseason bringing in many new players including quarterback Russell Wilson.

The Steelers have selected Cameron Heyward, Miles Killebrew, TJ Watt, and Russell Wilson as their 2024 season captains ahead of their season opener according to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com.

“Steelers’ players voted, and this year’s team captains are quarterback Russell Wilson on offense, defensive tackle Cameron Heyward and linebacker T.J. Watt on defense and safety Miles Killebrew on special teams,” Varley reported. “Wilson, who was signed in the offseason, is a Steelers team captain for the first time, but it’s not the first time he has been a team captain.”

“Heyward, who is in his 14th season, is a defensive captain for the 10th consecutive year, 2015-24. Only two players in franchise history have been selected as captain more than Heyward — Ben Roethlisberger (13) and Sam Davis (11). Watt is a defensive captain for the fourth time in his career. Watt was also captain in 2020, 2022 and 2023. This is the third time Killebrew was selected as special teams captain, previously earning the honor in 2022 and 2023.”

Three of the Steelers’ captains are returning as repeat captains. Wilson is a new addition to the captains as players mentioned how clear and veteran presence is throughout training camp.

Pittsburgh will open the season against offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s former team the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1. Following that, Wilson and the Steelers will face the Denver Broncos in a revenge game for the quarterback.
