Dolphins Sign Former Steelers Running Back To Join Talented Backfield

McFarland Jr. spent four seasons with the Steelers

A former Pittsburgh Steelers running back is returning to the league.

The Miami Dolphins announced several roster moves on Monday, including the signing of former Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. He joins a backfield that 2023 touchdown leader Raheem Mostert and the dynamic De’Von Achane. To make room for McFarland, the Dolphins cut running back Salvon Ahmed.

Pittsburgh selected the 26-year-old in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was with the team for four seasons from 2020 to 2023 before releasing him on Dec. 21, 2023. McFarland was added to the practice squad to close out the 2023 campaign. Over his four seasons with the team, the rusher appeared in 17 games, running for 146 yards on 42 carries while adding two receptions for 11 yards. He averaged 3.5 yards per attempt in his career.

McFarland most recently took part in the United Football League as a member of the San Antonio Brahmas. He was 15th in the league with 192 rushing yards on 47 carries over five games. The former Steeler averaged 4.1 yards per carry and scored a touchdown in his time in the UFL.

The 26-year-old will look to make the team as he joins the Dolphins late into the preseason.
