Steelers Newcomer Credits Aaron Rodgers For Surprising Success This Season

Kenneth Gainwell is a big fan of Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have gotten big contributions from several unexpected sources this season, including running back Kenneth Gainwell. After helping the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl last season, he joined the Steelers on a one-year, $1.79 million deal last offseason.

After four seasons as the Eagles’ RB2/3, Gainwell wasn’t expected to have a major impact on Pittsburgh this year. He figured to be the team’s RB2 behind Jaylen Warren and remain more of a complementary player.

Instead, Gainwell has thrived in the Steelers’ offense. The 26-year-old back has already set career highs in several categories, including rushing yards, receiving yards, receptions and total touches.

Gainwell has held his own alongside Warren in Pittsburgh’s backfield, especially in the passing game. He has six games with at least six catches this season — the most by a Steelers player since Diontae Johnson in 2021.

After erupting for 126 scrimmage yards on 20 touches against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football, Gainwell credited Aaron Rodgers for his success this season.

“Aaron Rodgers…Him trusting me, my hands. Just doing the small things, just going out there and working,” Gainwell told reporters.

Gainwell also praised Rodgers, who often gets a bad rap from fans and media for being a malcontent and bad clubhouse presence. He said that he’s been watching the former Super Bowl champ since he was a kid and loves playing with him.

“It just shows the character of him, being the guy he is, and he just understands the game,” Gainwell said. “Just happy to have him.”

At 42, Rodgers has focused on shorter passes and getting the ball out quickly this season, and Gainwell is clearly benefiting. The two have established great chemistry in the passing game, with Gainwell becoming one of Rodgers’ most trusted weapons.
