Darius Slay has been connected to three different teams over the last week — the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills.
The Steelers got things started by releasing the veteran cornerback on Tuesday. The Eagles and Bills then followed up by placing waiver claims on Wednesday, with the latter being awarded his services due to their placement in the order — though it hasn’t exactly been that easy.
Buffalo was forced to place Slay on the reserve/did not report list after he refused to show up upon being claimed, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. The Bills will retain his rights, however, potentially in an effort to block the six-time Pro Bowl selection from reuniting with the Eagles.
Slay divulged why he stayed home during his appearance on the “Speakeasy” podcast on Thursday.
“When I got home the other day, I was like ‘shoot, boy, this feels too good to be at the crib,'” Slay said. “I just got out of Pittsburgh. I don’t feel like packing up and moving again. I’m like, ‘Bro, I’m 13 years in. I done did it.’ Now if they’d have called me at 28 (years old), 29, I’d (be) like ‘OK!’ That’s a top organization. They’ve got a lot great things going. They going to the playoffs, they got a franchise quarterback.

“It wasn’t a bad fit. They just caught me at a bad time. … I talked to them, it was like a little mutual talk, but I said ‘hey, I’m 34 man. I know y’all be watching tape but I’m trying to relax with my family and kids.’ I ain’t feel like packing up and moving. Then, on top of that, no offense to Buffalo (but) it’s cold as hell. I’m from the south, baby. We don’t know what snow looks like.”
Slay’s decision wasn’t entirely shocking, having already stated he was playing in his final season, but it appears the end of his career has come slightly sooner than initially anticipated.
